Backgrounds
Martial arts is an traditional Chinese art form. Practicing martial arts can not only strengthen the body, but also defend the enemy's attack. Martial arts practitioners take "stopping invasion" as the technical guidance and lead practitioners into the traditional way of Enlightenment to understand the objective laws of man, nature and society, which is the guidance and guarantee of human material civilization.
Martial arts has the strength to stop war and maintain peace. As the survival skills of the Chinese people, Chinese Traditional Wushu has gone through thousands of years with the development of Chinese history and civilization. It has become the soul to maintain the survival and development of this nation and the soul to carry the genetic composition of the Chinese people.
Site
Project located in Wan Chai District in Hong Kong. The site set within the proximity of the Tin Hau and Tam Kung local temples,a series of Taoism heritage. Through preliminary research,we found out that around the district exist many institutions of martial art, which is the biggest reason to build a sensory museum of martial art. In addition ,the Eastern District was once a fishing village rich in traditional culture.Located adjacent to a series of Taoism, the District Cultural Square provides a perfect venue for these theatrical/cultural events.
The site was once an isolated waterfront area adjacent the Tam Kung Temple. It is inaccessible, sterile and inactive with low public patronage. The Sense Museum of Art Martial enhances the permeability and connectivity of the area under the urban design perspective. It destines to be a popular venue for all kinds of traditional art form like local events like martial art in particular, including wide range of initiatives such as Chinese opera, school events and carnival. In doing so, the museum with its square revitalizes and activates the harbourfront and the surroundings and transforming into a vibrant harbourfront by the introduction of the public domain through Transfiguring Tradition.
Concept
Martial art mostly originated in famous mountains like Mount Tai, Mount Song and Mount Wudang. Martial art and has a natural connection with these mountains. In a modern city like Hong Kong, Similarities and opposites exist at the same time between mountains and concrete forest. Our goal is to rebuild the mountain forest image in the modern city. So we are intended to create a new spatial sequence of space form originated from martial arts.
Design
We selected three different forms of traditional Chinese martial arts: Taiji, Bagua and Yongchun. By refining the dynamic space of martial arts, we can translate it into three different spatial sequences, which are expressed by different spatial prototypes. For the expression of Yongchun, which originates in Hong Kong, we select different spatial entity units. For the expression of Bagua, which rise in Mount Song, we select different folded plate spaces for expression. For the expression of Taiji, which originates in Mount Wudang,we choose the line form of spatial expression.
The three spatial sequences are vertically distributed and face the river in the same axis direction. This space form makes mountains and water echo each other. Considering the overall shape design, we take the shape expression of the mountain as the core traffic space, and create the spatial intention of mountains outside the mountain in the form of horizontal insertion. We intend to create a picture of Chivalrous man retreating from the mountains and forests to practice.
Expectation
We hope to make people feel the charm of martial arts by designing a sensory museum about Traditional martial arts. Martial arts brings strength and makes people active and healthy. What we create is not only the visual influence, but also the changes of people's character and mental state, responding the theme of "sense" from the inner level.
