Frank Lloyd Wright in his manifesto of organic architecture clearly stipulated the role nature has to take as part of the design philosophy architects have to embrace. Leonardo DaVinci also reiterates the same thought that, instead of copying nature in its genius form and methods, he advices to use nature as an inspiration for use by architects, that is to understand nature instead of replicating it.
In form giving, Nature in its different forms and infinity Form formulation ways uses code and Matrices that determine where each element is located within the gestalt whole which is determined by the specific role it has to take to facilitate to holistic nature of the being. Instead of an individualistic and selfish approach to design and form giving, uncomprehensive abstraction, it is crucial for the design of architectural elements to be defined by a specific role and use for purpose. Just as the hands, legs, liver, or any body part are of use within their own individualistic capabilities their role, limited as it may seem, adds to the wholesome survival and aesthetic appeal of the host whole. The constituent building elements should also follow the same logic in relation to the reaction and response to sunlight, where the whole body of the building is made alive by the individual elements working individually within their intended and maximum capabilities which consequently bring them together.
This was the birth of light in organs of Architecture, building elements as light constituents, that not only add to the functional light requirements but also add to the aesthetic nature of the structure taking sunlight as the source and driver of the form giving. Aesthetics being both intricate and externally communal that can be appreciated by other non-physical users of the building.
How then do we define the code that light and architecture can communally agree to?
Defining the code.
What if Architecture could not only serve the visual needs and aesthetic requirements of the intimate users but also of other visual users that live in the vicinity of the architecture?
What if architecture could respond to the natural nature of Humans, that is architecture that respond positively to the circadian rhythm of the users?
What if the buildings we reside in mirrors the dynamism of the lives of the users in the play of Light and Shadows on the walls and other building elements?
Instead of trying to fight the new Photography based architecture that is inspired by the advent of the Internet and other subsequent applications (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat…), why shouldn’t architecture provide the best natural lighting to facilitate that reality?
As any sighted individual can be accidentally blind at any point in their lives, why shouldn’t architecture cater for the Blind so that they are also able to experience the
light and shadows as they navigate and move through spaces? Haptic light Architecture?
With each room having each specific lighting requirements required for its intended use, and with the varying colour of sun lighting as the day progresses, what if each room could be sited in the most convenient position to capture the best lighting colour as the day moves?
Having Designs move as the day progresses, that uses the individuality of natural elements at any specific time for maximum and optimum use, at the same time meeting the functional requirements of the space.
What if Architecture could make users wonder, and leave visual and intimate users questioning how things either in their lives of the visual relations they see all having a base I how light and shadows respond to the geometry of the building they are comprised of?
Creating an Architecture that’s self-sufficient, that doesn’t require additional elements to push through a certain idea forward but remining within the limits of its physicality and materiality but using its constituents to the maximum capabilities for use to carry though an architectural thought and idea.
What if we could have Moving Light, light sunlight reaching facades and regions not conventionally considered to be flooded by natural light?
Breaking a Shadow?
Curving Light?
Slowing down light?
Once the code has been established, not only does the architecture responding to the specific site that it situated in but also becomes organic, grows and adapt over the course of use and this ensures that architectural development does not become redundant. The Flexibility of the code is determined by the additional information that is provided and in this case, with sunlight being the baseline of the thought, different sunlight conditions in different physical sites will ensure the code remains intact but following the provided Parameters.
Architecture that accommodates.
Harnessing the natural Light and playing with the shadows on the building elements to tell a story that the local and communal users of the building relate to and are proud of having.
An architecture that evolves and evokes.
The Power of Architecture!
